found poem for a mother

you said you were born into grief // I said so was I, and

you looked at me like it was the first time you had seen me,

eyes flickering from left to right // and back again as if

you hadn’t realized it before

left me at the door to tend to your pain

so we were more alone than we had any right to be

you said you don’t want to remember // your dreams

I cling to mine for a clue // I let them ruin me

my days are quieter now // without your rage

all tomorrows // end todays

I don’t miss it

they live on // in you or me

you live on // in the back of my head

your laughter

your anger

lives, a little, still
